Reuben College is able to provide a range of grants to its graduate students. The size and use of grants are specified so as to allow benefits to be shared among students, while adapting to the changing circumstances and needs of students.
Grants may be applied for under six main categories:
Information is also provided below on grants for group/theme based academic activities and on how to discuss accessing emergency support outside the termly meetings of Graduate Finance Committee.
Emergency support: Support for any particular emergency circumstances can be discussed with the College Bursar (bursar@reuben.ox.ac.uk). To arrange late payment of any college bills, for example, whilst waiting for a scholarship or loan disbursement, students should contact the college accountant: accounts@reuben.ox.ac.uk. Students facing unexpected hardship are advised also to refer to the University’s finance pages.
The Oxford Student Union’s Student Advice Service (SAS) can also be contacted confidentially for support on budgeting and financial planning.
The following general rules apply to College grants, unless explicitly stated otherwise:
- Applications may be made either in advance or in retrospect, within any one academic year.
- The event or activity supported must occur before your submission of final coursework or final exam, whichever is later, for your current degree.
- Applications may be made once per term and require a comment from the Senior Tutor and/or relevant College Advisor.
- Allowable costs are those that result directly from undertaking the purpose in the application (excepting hardship grants, not just living/accommodation costs that would have been incurred anyway).
- Where a grant is to be spent on books, then College may opt to purchase the books and place on long loan from the library until graduation.
- Grants will not be provided for fees of strictly academic or professional qualifications;
- If the same person makes repeated applications for a grant, the outcome of earlier applications will be taken into consideration.
- All funds have an upper limit for allocation each year, and in the event that applications exceed this then the size of individual awards may be scaled down.
- If approved, receipts/booking confirmations may be requested to support payment of the award.
- With the exception of writing-up grants, students currently on suspension or out of fee-liability are not eligible for grants.
- Where the donor of a fund or their family take an interest, recipients may be expected to write a letter of acknowledgement describing how the grant has been put to good purpose.
- Where grants are awarded on a capped basis, part-time students are normally eligible for the same funding on a pro-rata basis.
